The fair case
What a removals or moving company genuinely does better
For volume, movers win outright and we do not compete. They have the crews, the equipment and the experience to move a house, pack it properly, and handle furniture and awkward items no secure transport vehicle is set up for. They are also far cheaper per cubic foot than any specialist service. If you are moving a home, hire movers — that is simply the right answer.
The limit
Where the gap is
The gap is that a mover's process is built around volume, not around concentrated value. Valuation coverage is typically calculated by weight, which pays almost nothing for something small and valuable. Crews are often larger and more variable than a specialist movement, and goods may be consolidated with other shipments or held in transit storage, so the custody trail is not continuous. The practical answer for most people is both: movers for the household, and a separate documented movement for the small number of items where a weight-based settlement would be no settlement at all.

The honest verdict
Hire movers for the move. The mistake is letting the jewelry, the documents and three paintings travel in the same truck as the sofa, valued by the pound, in a carton labeled "master bedroom". Split those out and the movers' job gets easier too.
